Cockatiel Pets and Cockatiel Information

Cockatiel Information

Whether you are looking to buy or already own a cockatiel, here is an article full of cockatiel information.  Cockatiels are one of the best little birds you can own.  They are absolutely adorable and have great big personalities packed into one tiny bird.  Cockatiels are a great choice for people looking to own a smaller bird.  They are very easily trained and can be tamed if you are willing to put the time in.  If you haven’t already bought a cockatiel, you should definitely consider purchasing a hand fed baby.

            Cockatiel Information and Origin

If you need cockatiel information, you are probably already a cockatiel owner or are hoping to purchase one.  Cockatiels make great pets and are fairly low maintenance, as far as birds go.  Cockatiels are about 12 inches in length making them fairly small in comparison to their parrot cousins.  They originate from Australia and are related to cockatoos.  Cockatoos are about twice that size, but cockatiels have just as much personality packed into their tiny bodies.

Another great feature is that due to their size, cockatiels need much smaller cages.  Luckily for you, cockatiel cages are much cheaper than other cages.  They can get up there in price depending on how extravagant you would like to get.  Most cockatiels are happy with smaller cages and more human interaction.  The best thing you can do is spend lots of time with your feathered friend.  Cockatiels are very social animals and really enjoy spending time with their flocks.  Since they no longer have flocks (if they are living with you), you as a pet owner have to become their “flock”.  This is especially true if you don’t have any other cockatiels living in the same cage.  Gathering up all of the cockatiel information you can will help you to understand their nature and become a better pet owner.

            Cockatiel Cage Information

Cockatiels need to have adequate cage space in order to really flourish.  The ideal cage for your cockatiel will be roomy enough and have plenty of toys.  Cockatiels are very playful and love toys.  Providing the largest cage you can afford goes a long way to ensuring your cockatiels happiness.  The ideal cage will be at least 20 inches by 20 inches and at least 28 inches high.  This is still a pretty small cage and if you can afford to, you should buy a larger one.  Your cockatiel will be spending most of his time in a cage and getting the largest one you can afford will ease frustration.    When purchasing a larger cage, make sure that the bars are not too large.  A huge parrot cage will not work for a cockatiel.  If the bars are too wide your cockatiel can get his head stuck or suffer other injuries.  It’s really important that you take that into consideration when buying a cage.  Toys are also very important.  Cockatiels love to play and having lots of toys keeps them happy.  The best toys are mirrors and ladders.  They also love swings.  Ideally you should have a couple sets of three to four toys and rotate them.  This helps to keep your cockatiel from getting bored.

            Cockatiel Food Information

If you are looking into buying a cockatiel or just being a better pet owner, you should read this cockatiel information section on food.  Cockatiels should be fed a high quality pelleted diet.  Harrison’s bird food makes the best food available.   Cockatiels often don’t get adequate nutrition when fed only seeds.  This is because they tend to pick out what they like and leave the rest. They’re just like kids not eating their vegetables.  In addition to feeding a pelleted diet, offer fresh fruits and vegetables every day.  In extreme heat you may need to do this twice a day because food can spoil fairly quickly.  Cockatiel information experts highly recommend offering fresh veggies because cockatiel diets often lack necessary nutrients.  Cockatiels love lettuce and other greens and you should encourage them to eat them.  Try out new veggies often and see what your cockatiel seems to like.
